Atlas of Ancient Archaeology
This atlas traces the patterns of cultures and civilizations down to the beginning of the classical world. It does this region by region round the globe. Each region is presented by a specialist in that area. Each regional map shows cultural areas and marks a large number of archaeological sites and is accompanied by a general introduction to the ancient history of the region. It is followed by detailed descriptions, plans and reconstructions of the most interesting and attractive monuments. In all, about 170 important archaeological sites are described and illustrated.
The atlas encompasses the prehistoric background to the early civilizations in both time and space. Prehistoric Europe receives generous treatment. Where simpler ways of life lingered on, their monuments are included : for example, those of the Vikings and North American Indias. Inevitably, however, the focus of interest is on the great Bronze Age Civilizations of the Old WOrld and their later counterparts in the New, Many pages are devoted to the rich and diverse remains of Anatolia and Persia, of the river valley civilizations of Nile, Tigris-Euohrates and Indus, of Mycenaean Greece and Minoan Crete. Pre-Columbian Meso and South America receive equally full coverage.
The atlas should prove of great value to students. It will put in their hands a vast range of information and comparative material arranged on a geographical instead of the usual historical basis. It should be no less useful for travellers, guiding them with words and plans round tyhe ancient sites and at the same time telling them something of wider cultural setting.
