Abstract/Notes

The presence of migrants in Banjarmasin was related to trading activities. With the increase in the arrival of traders from outside the area who settled and became residents, villages were oriented to the origin of the area formed. Although socio-cultural contact between them continued, settlements with regional orientation were strengthened and reinforced by the colonial government's racial policies. Through a policy on settlements (wijkenstelsel), the city of Banjarmasin, which since the contract May 4, 1826 became part of the Land of the Governor, so the city was under direct regulation of the colonial government (Indonesia, 1965: 248-253) became a place for settlements that are separated by ethnicity. Wijkenstelsel separated residential areas based on the prevailing social stratification. Foreign Europeans and Easterners were cantered in the city government while the natives were stationed outside the city. The policy is intended so that they are easily monitored and controlled. Kampung Cina, Kampung Arab and Kampung Bugis were ethnic-oriented villages which are most likely the result of wijkenstelse. Therefore, this book on Portraits of immigrants in Banjarmasin contains 3 titles, namely: 1) Portraits of Kampung and Arab Communities in Banjarmasin by Hendraswati, 2) Portraits of Bugis Villages in Banjarmasin by Lisyawati Nurcahyani and 3) Chinese settlements in Banjarmasin to the Beginning Independence by the Listiana Fund.
